Regional Center of Excellence for Child Development

Among the Foundation’s priorities is establishing a Regional Center of Excellence for Child Development, (RCECD) in Beirut. The Center will be based at Saint George Hospital and Balamand University, and will be managed and guided in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and Emory University’s School of Medicine. The Center will focus on early detection of developmental delays and disorders in children and on early intervention. The Center will engage in regional level training, research, and surveillance, service and quality assurance activities. It also will focus on raising awareness and knowledge of the importance of early detection and intervention by health care providers and families. The costs for establishing the Center and conducting the necessary training are estimated to have an operating budget at $2 million over the first two years. There is a strong need for developmental screening, diagnosis and intervention in the Middle East. Promoting early identification of childhood developmental disorders and proper referral and management could contribute significantly to improving the health of children and their families in the region.
