The idea to form a foundation to support Saint George Hospital in Beirut was born in 1998 during a meeting in Washington, DC between Dr. Amin Barakat and Mr. Salam Rayes, CEO of Saint George Hospital. The American Foundation for Saint George Hospital, Inc. was launched at the Embassy of Lebanon in Washington, D.C. on October 19, 2000. Founding members were Dr. Amin Barakat, Dr. Stephen Brown, Mrs. Brenda Farha, Ben Lamberton, Esq. and Dr. Imad Mufarrij. Ms. Lama Najjar has served as the Foundation’s Executive Director since 2001, a position filled earlier by Ms. Tanya Rahall.


Our Objectives

The Foundation's main objectives are:

• Offering affordable health care to the needy
• Providing state-of-the-art health care to the people of Lebanon and the region
• Improving Saint George Hospital’s physical facilities and equipment
• Providing opportunities for Lebanese physicians, nurses and other health care professionals to improve their knowledge and skills through exchange programs and continuing education
• Improving health care and promoting medical research in Lebanon
• Providing quality education in the field of health sciences in Lebanon

The Foundation is engaged in fundraising for the hospital through:

• Fundraising dinners
• Direct Mail to a wide database of Americans and Lebanese-Americans --

• Talks in the community
• Personal contacts
• Attending and promoting the Foundation at national conventions
• Proposals for grants from individuals, governmental organizations, non-profit organizations and business corporations
